Riomaggiore Italy

Riomaggiore Italy is the southernmost village in the Cinque Terre. The colorful, stacked homes come right up to the waterfront so there's less of a piazza to hang out in but it has terrific rocks to sunbathe and people watch on! This was our second favorite village in the Cinque Terre (after Vernazza).

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre

Stroll down the main road from the train station right to the tumble of colorful little boats at the waterfront. There's swimming from a boat ramp or the rocks along the breakwater. My boys thought Riomaggiore had the best climbing rocks. They went on and on around the tip of the town and were great for budding explorers.

Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore had kayaks and boats to rent, and the remains of a castle, complete with a town clock. We walked (or rather hiked up, down, and all around) this village more than any other except Vernazza, where we slept. It's an amazing place to explore! Just take any little side street (usually an endless path of steps going straight up the hillside) for a completely different look at the village and the Meditteranean Sea below. Take another turn, go down a few steps, and then see where you end up. All roads and stairs eventually lead down to the waterfront piazza!

Via dell'Amore Cinque Terre

The hiking trail from Riomaggiore to Manarola, more of a walking trail here, is easily the most accessible! It's a delightful stroll from one town to the next, complete with legends of romance between the townsfolk. Nowadays, visiting lovers leave their own romantic tokens to add to the folklore of the Via dell'Amore (Way of Love).
